List of Anime LaserDiscs Exhibiting Frame Assignment Errors

This is among the most common gripes with anime LDs. Much of the material was prepared on film at the standard rate of 24 frames per second and transferred to 30fps video by the ordinary "3-2 pulldown" techniques, which makes alternate film frames occupy 3 and then 2 video fields in a regular sequence. As an added complication [according to personal communication with an A.D.Vision representative at Ushicon III], at least some anime is then edited in the 30fps video domain, so that the sequence can be interrupted and material appear in only one field. In order to permit acceptable behaviour of CAV laserdiscs in special play modes irrespective of source material, the Phillips/MCA specification provides for groups of fields of any length to be assigned unique frame numbers, and for "white flag" markers to be placed in the video after sequences of related fields to serve as action points. Unfortunately, not all production companies utilized this feature properly; if flags are set blindly at 30fps, only 2 or 3 of every 5 still frames may actually be watchable, particularly in busy scenes, as the others will consist of mixtures of adjacent frames. Worse yet, but less common, is the case in which the 3-2 sequence is correct for one group of frames but continues into another where it is not correct. Worst of all, but fortunately vanishingly rare, is the disc in which all the flags are offset by a single field and there are thus no clear still frames, or that without flags at all which will play only at a free run.
