Since hotlinking is primarily an issue with respect to image files, it is discussed here.
The information presented on this site is, as stated, made available by me as site owner and by the other contributors expressly for public use, and its reuse or dissemination is in no way forbidden except as expressly stated in the site policy, as for instance republication for gain or without acknowledgment of origin. Nevertheless users are expected to be courteous in their use of such information: those who intend to make an extensive or protracted use of files presented on this site by way of, e.g., electronic re-presentation should duplicate such files without substantive alteration and present them along with an obvious and unambiguous reference to www.caldc.com as the source, rather than indiscriminately generating traffic to specific locations within this site. Additionally, notification to me via publius at caldc dot com of any such reuse or republication is much appreciated.
All the photographs used on this site were prepared especially for that use, by me or one of the other contributors. None of them are taken from other Web sites, publisher's publicity materials, catalogues, or any other source. All of them have been obtained by photography of the object pictured, and not my reproduction of any existing image, or any other process or method. Thus, while the underlying artwork may be subject to an existing copyright, the photographs themselves are not so encumbered.
Gentlemen:
I am an anime fan who collects LaserDiscs.
I have been involved for some time in constructing a World Wide Web
site to serve as an archive of information, acquired by myself and
other LD collectors, about anime releases on LD. This site is of a
wholly non-commercial nature, and neither I nor anyone else has any
intention or hope of material gain out of it. As part of the
descriptions of selected discs, I intend to post photographs [taken
by the disc owners specifically for this purpose] of the front and
back of the covers. Among the discs so far archived are, naturally,
quite a number of AnimEigo releases, and I will undoubtedly add more
as time goes by. While I believe this is a clear-cut case of
"fair use", particularly as these discs are long out of
print by now, I would nonetheless like to be certain that I am not
doing any act which could be made a cause of legal action, and I
would like specific permission from you to post these images or at
least a statement that you will not interfere, before going forward.
Since these images are not from your site, but are of your products,
I decided that I should seek advice as to this specific situation
despite the inclusion of a similar topic in your FAQ. If you would
like to view the site in question, the current URL is as follows:
[EDITED 334/2757] www.caldc.com/index.html
Thank you.

In general, as long as you give a proper copyright attribution and a
link to our site, we don't mind this kind of thing as long as it's
tasteful.

I have provided copyright at the bottom of each page containing images of their product, along with the URL of their Web site, and there is a direct link on the AnimEigo Releases page. I leave it to you, gentle reader, to decide the question of taste. Personally I am a little proud of the white text on neutral grey; I think it is attractive and causes a minimum of eye fatigue. I am rather partial to the minimalist design, too.

Gentlemen:
I am compiling a World Wide Web site of a strictly noncommercial
character to archive information on anime in the LaserDisc format.
Among the entries are discs released by Bandai in Japan, of which
there will certainly be more added in future, and I think it likely
that there are some series which are at present or will be in future
Bandai USA titles. I am posting images, for informational purposes,
of the covers of various discs, from photographs I [and in future
possibly other contributors] have taken, and I would like to be
certain that you do not regards this as a cause of legal action
before proceeding. The address of this site is presently:

Gentlemen:
I operate the Comprehensive Anime LaserDisc Census, located at the World Wide
Web site www.caldc.com. Here I collect all kinds of information about Japanese
animation as released on LaserVision discs. In addition to tabular data, this
includes photographs of LD jackets, taken specifically for use at caldc.com.
Among the LDs I have archived is at least one Japan Home Video release, and more are likely in the future. I have not yet added photographs of this LD, but I intend to do so in the near future. I do not think that this use of images would infringe your copyright, but I am contacting you so that you will be informed of my activities, and so that you may express any objections you may have to my plan.
If I do not receive any communication from you within six weeks I will assume that you have no objection, and will go ahead as I originally intended.
Yours sincerely

I am therefore proceeding just as the message states.
